Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall

One of America’s most iconic memorials, the Vietnam Memorial Wall, is a traveling replica, 3/5 scale of the original in Washington, D.C., coming to Santa Clarita from Thursday, September 26 through Sunday, September 29. Be part of this important exhibit, featuring a 360-foot long, up to 8-foot high tribute to the 58,238 men and women in service who died or were recorded as missing in action during the Vietnam War.

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall will be erected in the Westfield Valencia Town Center parking lot, near the intersection of Magic Mountain Parkway and Citrus Street.

The Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall will be available for visitation from September 26 to 29, 24-hours a day; the exhibit is free and open to the public. The Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall creates an opportunity for communities to raise local awareness for its Vietnam veterans and to help our nation’s heroes, one community at a time.

Commemorative Event Schedule:

Thursday, September 26 – 6:00 p.m.
Friday, September 27 – 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, September 28 – 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, September 29 – 5:00 p.m.

Youth Essay Contest

The City of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County invite 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students to participate in an essay contest, answering the question “Why was the Vietnam War important to America?”


Essay Contest
Contest Rules:

  • Answer the question: “Why was the Vietnam War important to America?
  • Essay must be 500-700 words
  • Typed, double spaced and one sided on 8½ x 11 paper
  • All submissions will become property of the Friendly Valley Veterans Club and will not be returned to the author

Essays must be submitted by 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 2, to one of three Santa Clarita Public Library branches (Valencia, Old Town Newhall, Canyon Country) or one of three Los Angeles County Public Library branches (Castaic, Stevenson Ranch, Acton/Agua Dulce).

Scholarship prize money:
1st – $1,000
2nd – $750
3rd – $500

*Winners will be notified by mid-September

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed throughout the four days, 24-hours, the memorial tribute will be in the City of Santa Clarita.  The volunteers will provide information to the public, assist with grounds maintenance, help with setup and tear down, and to support veterans who may need assistance during their visit. More than 80 volunteer opportunities are available and interested residents should visit (click on Volunteer on the left) for additional details, times, and to submit request to volunteer.
